2006 – A Year to Leave Behind but Not to Forget

Researchers Dr Nigel Wilhelm, Scientific Consultant and Geoff Thomas, Project Manager, Low Rainfall Collaboration Group have put together a paper on the valuable lessons that farmers can take from the drought of 2006.

Observation of and participation in research carried out by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, amongst others, has led to this insightful paper.

Fertiliser P Management after the 2006 drought

The following discussion paper describes the principles related to the efficient use of phosphorus (P) fertiliser based upon current scientific evidence.

It assumes that dryland grain growers will need to adopt best management practises on all aspects of farming in 2007 to maximise economic returns following the 2006 drought. It also assumes that the 2007 seasonal conditions will be considerably better than those experienced in 2006, so that farmers can plan with some level of confidence next year.

Agronomy after the drought - A guide to decision making in 2007 (Southern region)

This GRDC publication is based on presentations and discussions at a GRDC 'Recovery After the Drought' cropping workshop run after the 2002 drought. However it has since been updated with the latest knowledge available in the topic areas covered for reconsideration in 2007.

It is designed to be relevant to growers cropping a wide variety of soil types in districts across NSW, Victoria and SA, so it contains mainly general principles and guidelines.

The paper can be accessed via the GRDC website here

Harvest Radio

The latest Harvest Radio is now available on the GRDC website.

The four part series cover key areas for consideration by growers and advisers in southern Australia, including disease management, soil nutrition, chemical carryover and understanding stored nitrogen. Interviews are undertaken from the recent GRDC Grains Research Update in Wagga Wagga and using the recent GRDC publication "Agronomy after the drought - a guide to decision making in 2007"

The Harvest Radio is available in both streaming and podcast format.
